I recently finished a new table runner.
This one was a surprise even for myself, since at the beginning I didn't plan to do a table runner at all. In fact, I was preparing the embroidery for making a table cloth!
I just ended up embroiding too much... and I thought using all of it for a table cloth was redundant, so I turned half of it into a table runner.
In the end, both the table cloth and the table runner came out really good, and this new table runner fits perfectly under my TV.
The embroidery was really dense and at the beginning this formed some wrinkles on the fabric ( they are clearly visible in some of the pictures). However, after a bit it settled down and the wrinkles are now completely gone. Due to this, at the beginning I was a bit disappointed, but now everything turned out fine.
I really like the blue and gold fabric, but I have unfortunately used almost all of it, I just have a tiny piece left. I bought a new one in red this time, but I might also buy the blue one again since it's really cute. I am starting to see these Japanese style fabrics more and more in Europe, I am glad they are now more available and easy to find.
My second project with Sashiko deserves more the name of "table runner" than the first one, since at least it has the right shape.
I still had a few pre-printed patterns from Japan (in fact, all 3 of them were preprinted). I decided for some bold colors so they could stand out from the white background. I had a lot of fun making it, so I could try and get used to different Sashiko patterns.
I used a very colorful Japanese fabric for the borders and the back, which matches with the gold and purple threads I used in the middle panel.
From the pictures, you can clearly see that I did not have a good iron yet... this was the last job of my portable travel iron before he declared his retirement. I soon bought a new one, they are way cheaper than I thought: I should definitely have done it before. My new iron can even produce steam, an ability my previous one lost long time ago...
I was curious about Sashiko (Japanese embroidery) and I took the opportunity when I was in Japan for buying some printed templates.
Looking back, I bought way too many templates with pictures, like the two white ones in the picture, and not enough geometrical templates like the blue ones. Now, I think geometrical patterns look so much better and I am not planning to work with pictures again.
I applied some colorful fabrics for making it less plain, but it was a really hard work and I was not so satisfied with the results.
The two geometrical patters are called "Shippo tsunagi" (the one with circles) and " ajiro" (the squared one). I draw the ajiro template myself on the fabric, I still have a lot to learn but I feel this is the right way - I cannot keep using pre-printed fabric forever, especially because they are very expensive outside Japan.
